Constraints of the durability of inorganic and organic consolidants for marble

Abstract In the present study, 5 different consolidants were tested on marble varieties preliminarily subjected to artificial weathering, evaluate their consolidating effectiveness and thermal behavior after consolidation, in terms of residual strain heating–cooling cycles dry wet condition tendency bowing. Treatments based ethyl silicate, with without a coupling agent improve performance calcitic substrates, exhibited modest increases cohesion as well an increase expansion coefficient some at end cycles. Paraloid B72 caused minor alterations pore system limited ultrasonic velocity, while so-called “acrylic total impregnation” method led almost complete filling significant improvements cohesion. While latter samples apparently resisted cycles, impregnated progressive collapse fabric, likely due low glass transition temperature B72. Ammonium phosphate proved be able significantly lower compared untreated marble. The DAP-treatment also ability slow down further bowing already bowed slabs prevent initially planar slabs.
